Launching Cybersecurity Products Amidst Rapid Challenges

3–4 minutes

Jumping into the cybersecurity scene, especially when the landscape is as volatile as it is now, can feel as spontaneous as packing for an impromptu trip to a foreign country. But yet, here I am!

When I started this journey in April, little did I know I’d be enveloped in the information, landscape, the ins and outs of what the industry wants, needs, and could be doing better for the world. After recently finishing my third certification in the Microsoft Cybersecurity Training Program, I have been collecting information from friends, new contacts, and many articles I have read online. As a newcomer to the industry, I am enthusiastic about collaborating with all my teams, including product, engineering, sales, sales enablement, finance, and executive leadership, to synchronize product marketing strategies with company objectives and customer needs. Yet, as with many industries, the market has been evolving rapidly, and my traditional mindset has shifted to a product marketing state of mind.

So… let’s talk about the evolving terrain. What’s on my mind is the latest SEC actions against SolarWinds and their CISO. There’s a new level of scrutiny, making the environment both exhilarating and daunting. The SEC’s lawsuit against SolarWinds has stirred the industry, marking the first time a CISO has been individually charged. This case underscores the vital need for transparency and accountability. For CISOs, this means the pressure is on to protect their organizations and ensure they meet stringent regulatory standards. It’s a tightrope between effective security measures and compliance; staying balanced is more crucial than ever.

CISOs are like firewalls for their organizations. They manage enormous budgets, make split-second decisions, and now deal with the additional layer of regulatory oversight. The stakes are high, and the margin for error is razor-thin. Understanding these challenges is the first step to launching successful cybersecurity products that resonate with them. And being an effective product marketing leader is critical to that success.

So, the pivot: How can we, as product marketers, energize and guide a team towards common goals, continuously learning and adapting to the evolving identity security landscape in alignment with their organizations, with an additional layer of regulatory oversight to cover our organizations?

Arm yourself with knowledge. And by that, I mean, know your shit. Keep your finger on the pulse of regulatory changes. Ask questions; when you get an answer, ask more questions to dig deeper. It will pay off to understand how the shifts are impacting your market and your potential customers.

Engage directly with your CISO and other CISOs to get the lowdown on their current pain points and priorities. Their firsthand knowledge is pure gold. The real issue is honesty. If you say your product “does everything,” then not only do I know you’re lying because it doesn’t and can’t, but it also opens you up to regulatory danger.

Take a closer look at what questions CISOs ask when buying products in your arena. Don’t know where to start? Use Andy Ellis’s guide as a starting point and tailor it to your specific needs. Need more CISO insights? Tap into the CISO Series and dive into the topics necessary to your niche.

Incorporate insights from CISOs and compliance experts to ensure your product addresses their needs and meets regulatory demands. Craft your messaging to highlight how your product solves the problem and helps organizations navigate these regulatory challenges while enhancing their security posture.

Stop focusing on buzzwords and puffery. I know, I know… I’m being the fun police. But this is a challenging industry. Concentrating on the CISOs’ evolving changes, needs, and regulatory landscape can position your company as a trusted thought leader in cybersecurity. This approach can help you navigate the complexities of product launches and build credibility and trust with your target audience, driving growth, market leadership, and awareness.

Just like preparing for a cybersecurity conference, stepping into this role and being in it is about more than just surviving; it’s about thriving. I am excited to embrace the journey with curiosity, vigilance, and a proactive approach to learning.

Stay safe and curious!
